Author: Kützing, F. T. Title: Die kieselschaligen Bacillarien oder Diatomeen. Mit 30 gravirten Tafeln. Zweiter Abdruck.
Description: Nordhausen, Ferd. Förstemann, 1865. 4to (28.8 x 23.0 cm). 152 pp.; 30 lithographed plates. Quarter cloth portfolio with printed boards. = In this work, the German microscopist and phycologist Friedrich Traugott Kützing (1807-1893) described a great number of new taxa and is first revisor of many others previously described by Ehrenberg. Kützing considered the diatoms as plants, whereas Ehrenberg regarded them as animals. The first edition was published in 1844 and is quite rare. The printing of the plates - drawn by Kützing - seems to be better, stronger in the second edition. In fact, these sepia plates are excellent. Printing errors in the first edition are corrected here. Uncut. Spine reinforced with linen strip, skilful repair to lower outer corner; slight marginal age toning, otherwise a very good, clean and unmarked copy. Rare to see in the original printed portfolio. Poggendorf I, 1326; Stafleu and Cowan, 3975.
