Early19th century pebbled half morocco over marbled boards. Spine with gilt title; green endpapers. = The first volume, first part of the only German translation of the "Danske Atlas" by the Danish bishop, historian, and ornithologist Erik Ludvigsen Pontoppidan den yngre (the younger) (1698-1764). The German translation was limited to the first volume only. It contains the first general description of Danish geology and zoology, several contributions dealing with the palaeontology and geology of the island of Bornholm. The whole work was published in seven parts, but this is the only one dealing with geology, palaeontology and zoology. The first chapter deals first with the history of Danmark, with a the first two plates illustrating ancient coins and a golden horn, but the majority, with 15 plates, is on natural history. The plates depict fossils, geological formations, fishes, birds and insects, for which Pontoppidan used the Linnaean system (10th edition). The second part of the first edition, here not included, deals with the town of Copenhagen. Lacks a folded map of Denmark. Some very light spotting to the text; the plates clean. Rare.
