Spine with gilt title on two (red and green) morocco labels. = First edition of a nicely illustrated work on all aspects of geology. Especially volcanology and mineralogy are extensively dealt with, but the palaeontological part is well-illustrated as well. The German mineralogist Carl Friedrich Alexander Hartmann (1796-1863) also published the Handwörterbuch der Mineralogie und Geognosie and Handbuch der Bergbau and Fortschritte der Bergbaukunst and Eisenhüttengewerbe. He translated Charles Lyell’s “Elements of geology” into German. Old library stamp on front free endpaper recto, and title page verso, both from a Dutch field artillary library. Front hinge partly split, the plates slightly foxed at the edges.
