Large 8vo (25.2 x 16.7 cm). 216 pp. Elegant later half calf over marbled boards, spine with four raised bands, rich gilt ornaments, gilt titles on black leather labels. = Contains the preface, and descriptions, distribution records and references, including lists of synonyms, of French marine molluscs, and includes new names, although this is not always immediately apparent. This is the first part only, dealing with cephalopods and most gastropods. However, it is an edition that does not only precede the completed edition, but also differs in pagination: in the latter edition, the six preface pages were given Roman page numbers, and the pagination of main work started anew in Arabic numerals, thus numbered differently [N minus 6, versus N]. Refering to page numbers in this work, therefore, needs special attention. A fine copy - the binding is extraordinary luxurious - of this scarce and taxonomically important work.
