Title: Recherches sur les Synascidies.
Description: Coulommiers, A. Moussin, 1872. 8vo (24.1 x 15.2 cm). 204 pp.; ten lithographed plates including six in spectacular chromolithography. Original printed wrappers. = A fine monograph on this group of shallow water Tunicata with several new species, mainly from Roscoff in Brittany. It contains an index bibliographique des travaux relatifs a la classe des tuniciers, listing some many important publications. Alfred Mathieu Giard (1846-1908) was principally known as an entomologist but he also coined the word poecilogonie (poecilogony) to describe a phenomenon in marine invertebrates in which dissimilar larvae develop into similar adults, a phenomenon still causing debates today. This is the author's thesis; it was also published in the Archives de Zoologie Expérimentale. Uncut. A few light spots, otherwise a very good clean copy. Rare. Not in Nissen.
