Title: Topographie souterraine du Bassin Houiller de Valenciennes. Cartes et plans.
Description: Paris, Imprimerie Impériale, 1869. Folio (54.8 x 38.5 cm). Half-title, title page, 24 mostly double-paged maps, partly coloured and numbered (two plates plain). Original printed wrappers. Spine covered with black linen strip. = Important folio atlas by the French mathematician, geologist and mining engineer Ernest Émile Dormoy (1829-1891), dealing with important coal regions in northern France and adjacent southern Belgium, once among the richest in Europe. Together, the first 15 numbered, double-sized maps may form one enormous map. Plate 5 (dated 1867), contains no map, but the following text: Carte topographique souterraine du bassin houiller de Valenciennes reuni au bassin du couchant de Mons. The following five plates are page-sized, not numbered, and show profiles. the 21st map is super-sized and shows a Correspondence de toutes les veines des diverses concessions. A text volume to this atlas was published, but not included here. It includes the Tableau assemblage as first map and one map with a legend with different colours and one Tableau statistique et graphique de l'Industrie houillière de 1810 à 1864. The flimsy wrappers torn at edges, with some simple repairs. Rather rare. It is not in any major bibliography.
