Title: Untersuchungen zur Anatomie und Histologie der Thiere.
Description: Bonn, Emil Strauss, 1883. 8vo (24.3 x 16.3 cm). [iii], 174 pp.; eight double-sized, fine lithographed plates. Original half cloth over printed boards. Gilt title on the spine. = These "Untersuchungen" are based on the studies and observations of Leydig's contemporaries as well as his own original research. They are mainly on the sensory cells, particularly those of fish, but also, for example, those of terrestrial slugs (Limax). The German zoologist and anatomist Franz [von] Leydig (1821-1908) is best known for his researches in cell biology. Provenance: the nice pictorial bookplate of the American zoologist Charles Atwood Kofoid (1865-1947) on the front paste-down. Kofoid had a strong interest in planktonic life, in particular Protozoa, which shows in this bookplate. Boards a bit rubbed, joints weak, with the plates (on thicker paper) partly detached; otherwise a very good copy. Rare. Not in Dean.
