Marbled edges. = A rare, early work on embryology by the German anatomist and embryologist Karl Bogislaus Reichert (1811-1883). DSB: "Reichert made a very important contribution to the knowledge of transformations of early structure during the embryo's development and the understanding from a comparative point of view of the development of an individual organism." The plates do depict the microscopical development of embryo's of frogs and chickens. Former owner's inscription, dated 1864, on the front free endpaper recto. Boards rubbed at edges, spine partly chipped; some light foxing througout, damp staining to upper gutter and top margin, progressively stronger on the last few plates.
