Comprising of the Domesday Book Studies, which is a detailed explanation of the Domesday Book and therefore a companion to the other two volumes. The work explains the making of the Domesday Book, its contents, the purpose of it and the value of it. The other two volumes to this set are specifically on the Devonshire portion of the Domesday Book. One volume is an introduction and translation and the other holds two large folding maps and also contains facsimiles of the actual Domesday Book portion on Devonshire. By Dr Ann Williams, editor in chief and R W H Erskine general editor. The Domesday Book was a manuscript of the 'Great Survey' of much of England and Wales completed in 1086 by order of King William the Conqueror. It was written in Medieval Latin and included some vernacular native terms without Latin equivalents. This particular collection is The Devonshire circuit of the Domesday. In original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards and held in original slipcase. Externally, excellent condition with minor shelfwear, a few handling marks to the white cloth. Slipcase is also in excellent condition with a few minor marks. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound, pages are bright and clean throughout. Fine . Ill.: Various. Fine .
