Direct from the Regency library of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Coffin Greenly. Elizabeth Greenly, born at Titley Court, Herefordshire, was a noted and varied collector. She kept prolific diaries from 1784 until her death in 1839 which included her responses to current events and occasions in her daily life. Among the diaries many names and anecdotes of celebrities of the time appear, including Lord Byron, Marie Atoinette, Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More. She was known to comment on customs of foreign countries to which she and her friends had travelled, and had a keen interest in scientific discoveries and advancements including medicine and archaeology. The Greenly library contents show Elizabeth Greenly's numerous interests including: Welsh causes, Science, topography, travel, Bibliana and literature, particularly female poets. The library contains many first editions of contemporary works, and many are signed or contain her bookplate. The library contained over 1000 volumes which show the diversity and depth of her interests and give an insight into the life of this fascinating collector. 8 plates to volumes I, books I and II, including folding frontispiece. 1 plate to volume II, book IV. Half a plate 'Hibernicus Oceanus' loosely inserted to volume VI, book XI. No collation found for plates, however binding instructions for book I and II plates bound in volume IX and all plates are present. Henry's six volume History of England is his most successful work. It attracted the support of the Earl of Masfield and brought the author over £3,000. James Petit Andrews' continuation of Henry's work was equally as popular. In half calf bindings. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to spines and joints. Small crack to front joint of volume V (books IX and X). Front hinge to volume II (books III and IV) is starting but firm. All volumes have prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, E H Greenly. Her signature is written to the title pages of volumes VII (books XIII and XIV), V (IX and X), VI (XI and XII) as well as volume III (V and VI). Her signature is to the pastedown of volume IV (books VII and VIII). Internally, all volumes are generally firmly bound though strained in places.
