Second Series only. Thomas Colley Gratton, 1791 - 1864, was an Irish journalist and novelist. "Irving privately found Grattan "an arrant literary tradesman" and "a bore" (Irving, Journal, 17 Feb and 17 Nov 1824). But he generously read his work and helped him find a publisher for a collection of his stories which eventually appeared in 1823 under the title Highways and Byways, or, Tales of the Roadside, dedicated to Irving. This made his name and remained his best-known work. French translations soon followed and there were further series in 1825 and 1827" -ODNB. In cloth biniding with gilt lettering. Externally, there is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping with sunning and marks to the boards. The cloth to the hinges is splitting to volumes 2 and 3, and the spine of volume 1 has come away. Internally, generally firmly bound, loosening in places. Pages 25-26 of volume 3 is partially attached. Pages 97-120 of volume 1 are held by the cords only. Pages have some slight browning with the occasional spot, becoming prominent to the first and last pages as usual. There is the occasional ink mark to the margins. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
