Walter Besant wrote of his reaction on first reading Jefferies: "Why, we must have been blind all our lives; here were the most wonderful things possible going on under our very noses, but we saw them not." Five volumes of the original six volumes in The Silver Library collection. All volumes are in their original maroon cloth bindings, with gilt detailing to the spines. Externally, all volumes are sound, with only some light fading to the spines. Internally, all volumes are generally firmly bound, although with the frontispieces detached to Field and Hedgerow and Toilers of the Field.
