The work as a whole is an important touchstone in literary biography and literary criticism, and an example of Samuel Johnson's lasting contribution to English literature. In half morocco binding with marbled boards and gilt detailing to the spine. Externally, in excellent condition with just some shelfwear to the spine. Sotheran booksellers label to the verso of the front free endpaper of volume I. Front hinge to volume I slightly strained after endpaper but still reasonably firm. Internally, firmly bound.
