First published in between 1779 and 1781, Johnson's Lives, as it is often known, comprises short biographies and critical observations of 52 poets. Of these, six have been singled out as the most important, being those of John Milton, John Dryden, Alexander Pope, Joseph Addison, Jonathan Swift and Thomas Gray. The work as a whole is an important touchstone in literary biography and literary criticism, and an example of Samuel Johnson's lasting contribution to English literature. Sotheran booksellers label to the verso of the front free endpaper of volume I. Front hinge to volume I slightly strained after endpaper but still reasonably firm. Internally, firmly bound.
