In his youth he served with the 62nd Foot, but resigned his comission in 1843 to become a draughtsman. However, his literary interests soon took over, and soon devoted himself to writing. His first novel was The Romance of War, based on the experiences of his father's regiment of Highlanders in the Peninsular War. It was a moderate success, and soon he was writing two or three novels a year. Most of his novels had war as a theme, and many besides dwelt on Scottish subjects. This novel was published only 5 years before his death. It concerns the Crimean war, which had occured only in the 1850s. The war had a significant cultural impact in Britain; this novel provides an example of the war's reception. In keeping with Tennyson's The Charge Of The Light Brigade, Romance is the most prominent characteristic.
