Felicia Hemans - The Works of Mrs Hemans; with a Memoir of Her Life, by Her Sister

Title: The Works of Mrs Hemans; with a Memoir of Her Life, by Her Sister
Description: Edinburgh and London, William Blackwood and Sons, 1854-1857. Cloth. A complete seven volume edition of The Works of Mrs Heman. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and blindstamped decoration. Seven volumes, complete. A smart cloth and gilt set of the best collection of Hemans poems. With an Edmonds & Remnants bookbinder's label to the rear pastedown of Volume I. Felicia Hemans, 1793 – 1835, was an English poet. Her first poems were published in 1808, when she was only fourteen, arousing the interest of no less a person than Percy Bysshe Shelley, who briefly corresponded with her. Marriage was no hindrance to her literary career, however she later separated from her husband. From 1831 onwards, she lived in Dublin near her younger brother, and her poetic output continued. Her major collections were immensely popular, especially with female readers. By her death, Hemans was a well-known literary figure, highly regarded by contemporaries such as Wordsworth, and with a popular following in the United States and the United Kingdom. "With twenty volumes and nearly four hundred poems published in magazines and annuals during her lifetime, Felicia Hemans was the most considerable woman poet of the Romantic periodÂ-. Some readers find her floral and topographical language and frequent allusions to history and literature purely decorative, while others propose that these elements reflect a systematic and critical study of politics and gender. Hemans's characteristically insistent rhythm and insinuating tone appear to support the latter argument, as do her pointed revisions of sources such as the work of Gibbon or Byron." (DNB) CONDITION In full cloth bindings. There is slight wear to the extremities, including slight bumping. The front hinge of volumes 2 and 7 are slightly strained. Internally, the bindings are generally tight and firm. Pages are generally clean and bright, with the occasional spot. Volume 7 has evidence of past worming to the first several pages. Pages 193 to 208 of volume 4 are partially detached. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
