Elizabeth Daniel - The Poor Cousin: A Novel. In Three Volumes

Title: The Poor Cousin: A Novel. In Three Volumes
Description: London, T C Newby, 1846. First edition. Leather. A very scarce first edition of Elizabeth Daniel's first novel, in three volumes. Elizabeth Daniel (b. 1822) was the illegitimate daughter of George Spencer-Churchill, fifth duke of Marlborough; she had a son and daughter with her novelist husband Robert Mackenzie Daniel. When Robert was hospitalised due to mental illness in 1846, Elizabeth began writing as a means to provide for her family. Between 1841 and 1877 she published more than twenty novels, the best-known being Georgina Hammond (1849). (ODNB). "The Poor Cousin" was the first of Elizabeth Daniel's novels, published anonymously in the same year as her husband's hospitalisation. Instead of Elizabeth's name, or that of her husband who edited the book, the title page simply reads, "Edited by the author of 'The Scottish Heiress;' 'The Young Widow;' 'The Young Baronet;' Etc.". Robert's preface to the novel explains this decision was made in the hope that his association, as a successful novelist, would mean libraries would be more inclined to accept it. In half calf leather bindings with marbled boards. Externally, spines rubbed and boards worn. Leather to one corner partially detached. Library copy; gilt titling to spine reads Cape of Good Hope Public Library. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Internally, second and third volumes firmly bound. Some sections of first volume disbound. Half of final page of third volume missing (including final paragraph of text) and closed tears to facing blank. Library stamp to three title pages. Closed tear to fifth page of second volume, previously repaired. Pages have some slight spotting, and pencil and handling marks throughout. Fair . Ill.: None. Fair .
