Cumberland wrote in several sub-genres of comedy, First Love is a sentimental comedy whereas false impressions a melodramatic comedy. Four of the plays from this set are comedies with The Mysterious Husband being a domestic drama with a tragic ending. Cumberland found inspiration for The Mysterious Husband from the 1768 gothic novel, The Mysterious Mother by Horace Walpole. Disbound. Externally, age-toned with some spotting.
