Description: London, Griffith and Farran, 1875. Leather. The illustrated first edition of this children's novel by Barbara Hutton, in a full calf prize binding. The subject of the work is the Marquis of Montrose, who is referred to in Scotland as "the Great Montrose". He was a cavalier, who fought in the English civil war on the side of the King. Hutton says in her preface that "In the present prosaic age..it may not be uninstructive to the rising generation, that they should also read of the disinterested motives and high aims of the Great Cavalier." Illustrated with a frontispiece that shows Montrose, and a plate showing the death of Lord Gordon. In a full calf prize binding, with the crest of Somersetshire College to the front board in gilt. Externally sound with just a little rubbing to the extremities and spine, and very light marking to the boards. Internally, lightly foxed here and there throughout. Generally firmly bound.
