Hugh Dalrymple - Rodondo; or the State Jugglers Canto I and II

Title: Rodondo; or the State Jugglers Canto I and II
Description: London, W Nicoll, 1763. First edition. Leather. A short, witty first edition of this poem concerning the hypocrisy and pretensions of society. Rodondo, derived from the Spanish redondo, literally translates as 'around' and refers in this poem to the cyclical nature of human behaviour and society. Captain Hugh Dalrymple, sometimes spelled Hew, (ca 1740 - 1774) was a Scottish advocate and poet who served as Attorney-General of Grenada. Not much is known about his life except that he came from a noble Scottish family (the Dalrymples) and was the third generation of the family to carry that name. In a half-calf leather binding with marbled boards. Externally, quite worn, with moderate rubbing to the joints, boards and extremities. The front joint is weak, with the back board fully detached. Internally, the front hinge is slightly strained but still holding firm. Some browning and light foxing to pages, but text is still clear and easy to read. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
