An Uncommon edition. William Dodd (1729 - 1777) was an English Anglican clergyman and a man of letters. He dabbled in forgery in an effort to clear his debts, was caught, convicted, and, despite a public campaign for a Royal pardon, became the last person to be hanged at Tyburn for forgery. The Visitor is a collection of weekly columns first published in John Newbery's The Public Ledger between 1760 to 1761. In a full calf binding. The front boards are detached and the text block of volume II is split in two. The rear hinge of volume I is cracked and may detach in the post despite due care given. The rear hinge of volume II has been repaired. There is wear to the extremities, including bumping. The binding is generally firm. Internally the pages are clean and bright with browning to the edges of the title pages. With a couple of spots and handling marks only. Overall the condition is good only with very good interior.
