William Cowper - Poems by William Cowper of the Inner Temple Esq.

Title: Poems by William Cowper of the Inner Temple Esq.
Description: Dublin, John Jones, 1787. Leather. A two volume set of poetry from the forerunner of the Romantics, William Cowper. Many of the poems published in this work were written on recovery of his attack of insanity, where he believed he was eternally condemned to hell and the influence of this can be seen in his pieces, The Progress of Error and Human Frailty. The Task, a work in six books, forms the majority of Volume II along with the comic verse The History of John Gilpin who was the man who saved him from a life of insanity. Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. The author is also known for his authorship of hymns and his translation of Homer"s works. In a calf binding. Externally, smart with marks to boards. Rear hinges strained but firm. Ink inscriptions to front free end-papers and title pages of both volumes, dated to 1807 and 1841. Internally, firmly bound with just light occasional foxing. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
