Description: London, Archibald Constable and Co , 1809. Leather. A remarkable compilation of the state papers from one of the most influential statesmen of the tudor period. Featuring an engraved frontispiece of Thomas Cromwell to volume one, from an original painting by Holbein, and engraved by R. Cooper. As well as a frontispiece of Mary Queen of Scots to volume two, also engraved by R. Cooper. Volume one also features four plates of signature facsimiles all dated in the late 1500's. Collated complete. Contains "A Memoir of the Life of Sir Ralph Sadler, with Historical Notes" by Walter Scott. Sadler was a major 16th century historical figure, and took part in important diplomatic negotiations with Scotland, the trail of Mary Queen of Scots, and served as a Secretary of State for King Henry VIII. These works contain his parliamentary orations, including a speech on succession in 1563 and one on subsidy in 1566. Complete in two volumes. Rebacked in tree calf bindings with gilt lettering to the spines. Externally, generally sound but with light wear to extremities. Internally, both are firmly bound with intermittently bright pages to volume one, and volume two being bright throughout. Occasional instances of foxing, predominantly to the first and last pages. Armorial bookplate to the front pastedown to both volumes. Off-setting to title pages, and institutional stamp to title page of volume I. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
