Bound in leather, with gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. Undated, presumed first. Philip Doddridge (1702 – 1751) was an English Nonconformist leader, educator, and hymn writer. Doddridge was a prolific writer and his The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul was translated into seven languages. It has been referred to as "that holy book". John Foster (1770–1843) was a Baptist minister and essayist. His Essays in a Series of Letters to a Friend (1805) was extremely successful, by 1856 it had run to twenty editions. Foster's opinions were often controversial. He believed that "churches are useless and mischievous institutions, and the sooner they are dissolved the better" (letter, 10 Sept 1828). Though a Baptist minister, he never once administered baptism; nor did he believe in eternal punishment or the rite of ordination. In a full calf binding. There is mild wear to the extremities, including mild bumping. The binding is tight and firm. Internally the pages are clean with faint browning to the page edges and the very occasional spot.
