Alfred John Church and with an illustration to frontispiece and further full page illustrations throughout. With a vignette to the head of each chapter. Alfred John Church (1829 - 1912) was an English classical scholar. While at University College in partnership with William Jackson Brodribb, he translated Tacitus and edited Pliny's Letters (Epistulae). Church also wrote a number of stories in English re-telling of classical tales and legends for young people. He also wrote much Latin and English verse, and in 1908 published his Memories of Men and Books. In a prize presentation binding with bookplate dated 1915 to front pastedown. With 'Scholastic' booksellers and binder's label to rear pastedown. In a calf binding. Externally, in a lovely condition with only minor shelfwear. Rear hinge strained.
