He is believed to have served with the Royalist army in the Civil War. He was the author of many works of very unequal merit, of which the best known is Drunken Barnaby's Four Journeys, which records his pilgrimages through England in rhymed Latin, and doggerel English verse. Heraldry today label to rear pastedown. In contemporary half leather with marbled paper covered boards but with new endpapers. Externally, sound but with some wear to extremities, rubbing and marks to boards. Front joint cracked with backstrip lifting slightly. Internally, generally firmly bound but with the odd page starting. Bright and generally clean but with slight foxing, heavier to first and last pages and institutional ink stamps. Good . Ill.: None.
