Author: W S Gilbert Title: Fifty &Apos;Bab&Apos; Ballads Much Sound Little Sense
Description: London, George Routledge, 1887. Leather. A charming collection of fifty of W S Gilbert's Bab Ballads. With a few vignette comic illustrations by Gilbert. The Bab Ballads were written before Gilbert became famous for his comic opera librettos with Arthur Sullivan. From writing the Bab Ballads Gilbert's 'topsy-turvy' style was developed where the humour was derived by setting up a ridiculous premise and working out its logical consequences, however absurd. Gilber's satirical and cynical approach to humour can also be seen from the Ballads. Sir William Schwenck Gilbert was an English dramatist, librettist, poet and illustrator. He is best known for the fourteen comic operas he produced in collaboration with Sir Arthur Sullivan. In a half calf binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Spine is cocked slightly at the rear joint. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are slightly age-toned to the edges with the odd spot throughout. Good . Ill.: W S Gilbert. Good .
