Description: London , James Nisbet, 1826. Leather. A scarce work from social reformer Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna. A scarce work from social reformer Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering. Second Edition, Corrected. Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna, 1790 Â 1846, was an English evangelical Protestant writer and social reformer. Her first marriage took her to Ireland, but after their separation, Tonna moved to Clifton with her brother, making the acquaintance of Hannah More. During her time in Ireland, Tonna published religious tracts to the Dublin Tract Society. She continued to publish after returning to England. Tonna left a "legacy of many literary works and active involvement with social causes.. Some of these causes, like her anti-Catholicism, are offensive to modern readers, but Tonna was also indefatigable in her support of the poor and oppressed.. Tonna's contributions to social reform literature and her use of the Christian Lady's Magazine as a forum to influence politics through her female readers mark her as a significant nineteenth-century figure" (DNB) The binding is tight and firm. The front hinge is only just starting, but still firm. There is mild wear to the extremities, including mild rubbing. Internally the pages are bright with occasional spots, most prominent to the first and last few pages only. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
