Description: Oxford; Dublin, Clarendon Press, 1765. Leather. A scarce complete two volume set of letters and diary entries from the Henry Hyde, the second Earl of Clarendon. Scarce. Letters include correspondence to King James II, the Lord Treasurer, Lord Sunderland and the Bishop of Downe and Connor. The lengthy preface to Volume I begins to indicate the purpose of the publication to be the Earl's attempt to clarify the events in Ireland. During his time in Ireland, the Earl struggled to establish authority and hold on to his office due to the commander-in-chief, The Earl of Tyrconnell. He was also a key figure in the in the king's intention to introduce Roman Catholics into the Irish judicial and administrative system, as well as into the army. Rebound in half-calf bindings. Externally sound with rubbing to head and tail of spine, front board corners and slight wear to rear board. Strained hinges to Vol. I have been reinforced with cloth tape on both volumes. Internally, firmly bound with foxing to the pages of Vol. I otherwise bright and clean with occasional handling marks. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
