The story of a Massachusetts teacher, Lydia Blood, who ventures to Europe and encouters the man who will become her husband. It deals with themes of American identity and social morality in the late nineteenth-century. William Dean Howells (1837 - 1920) was an American realist author, a literary convention he advocated, who had a tenure as editor for the 'Atlantic Monthly&apos. He was a contemporary of Twain, Dickinson and Garland, whose works he supported. In a red half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally sound with slight rubbing. Ink inscription to front free-endpaper dated 1888. Internally firmly bound. Pagers are generally clean, with a small tide mark to the tail of several pages to the front of the volume. Good .
