Description: Dublin, John Smith, 1752. Leather. A collection of letters by Henry St John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke. Complete in two volumes, bound as one. Undated, dated using Copac. A scarce Dublin imprint published the same time as the London imprint. First edition of this work. These letters were originally printed privately before his death and were published posthumously. Bolingbroke was an English politician, government official and political philosopher. Despite personal anti-religious views he politically supported the Church of England and is best remembered today as the philosopher of the Country Party. In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart with bumping to the extremities. A few marks to the boards. Lacking most of backstrip. Title page to volume I has the top portion removed by a previous owner. Rear joint and hinge have failed with rear board detached. Prior owner's inscriptions to the endpapers. Internally, binding is strained in places. Pages are age toned.
