Illustrated frontispiece with portrait of Goethe. Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805 -1874) was a German painter, noted mainly as a muralist, but also as a book illustrator. His murals decorate buildings in Munich from Louis I ambition to turn Munich into the German Athens. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. The women studied are Adelheid, Gretchen, Leonora and many more, all complimented by explanatory texts from G. H. Lewes. In a morocco binding. Externally, very smart with blindstamped detailing to board. Both hinges reinforced with cloth tape. Internally, it has been rebacked, preserving the original boards. Generally firmly bound with pages bright and clean, though slight spotting to first few pages. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
