He was referred to by Horace Walpole as 'an inspired idiot&apos. Includes one of his foremost works, the pastoral poem 'The Deserted Village&apos. Complete with 40 gilt bordered, colour woodblock illustrations by Birket Foster and H. N. Humphreys, the former of whom was incredibly popular in Victorian Britain, famed for his idyllic images of rural England. In a full morocco binding with attractive gilt detailing to the spine. Externally, generally smart with some shelfwear and just a little rubbing to the boards and spine. Hinges are slightly strained.
