There are illustrations throughout, including in text and full page plates, plus a full page frontispiece. Edward Bradley (18271889) was an English novelist and clergyman. He was born in Kidderminster and educated at Durham University (from which he took his pen name). He wrote under the name of Cuthbert M. Bede, B.A. a few novels and tales, Fairy Fables (1858), Glencraggan (1861), Fotheringhay (1885), etc. His most popular book was The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green, on the experiences of an Oxford undergraduate. There was a sequel, Little Mr Bouncer and his friend Verdant Green. Tales of College Life (often bound with it), introduces the character of Mr Affable Canary. The celebrated illustrations to the Verdant Green books were the work of the author. In a full tree calf binding with gilt stamped detailing to the spine and board edges. Both boards and all other pages are securely attached. There are two bookplates to the front pastedown. Apart from some mild cracking to the spine area, the extremities are in very good condition. The binding is slightly loose with the marbled and blank, front endpapers being detached but present. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, apart from the occasional handling mark and minor brown spot. The original covers are slightly grubby. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
