"This two-volume work, with its lively and authoritative artists' biographies, was widely acclaimed and quickly took its place as an outstanding reference text for the history of art: although undergoing numerous revisions and enlargements, it retained its prominence until the early twentieth century, and still features in bibliographical citations." - DNB In half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. The inner hinges are strained. The front inner hinge of volume two has failed, and is readily repaired. There is mild wear to the extremities, including bumping. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. The pages are clean and bright with slight age toning to the page edges. There are several small spots on the first and last couple of pages. Overall the condition (apart from the hinge) is very good. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
