Description: London, Sare, 1708. Leather. A diligent biography of a gregarious and well-loved minister. William Hopkins (1647-1700) was educated at Oxford before travelling to Sweden as chaplain to the English ambassador. Having returned to England in 1675 he was made prebend of Worcester, and three years later Curate of Mortlake. He left Mortlake to become a preacher at St. Lawrence Jewry in London, during time which he developed a close friendship with George Hickes, Dean of Worcester. Hickes was heard to describe Hopkins as a 'well-read, conscientious, and charitable' priest with a particular passion for enhancing the Cathedral's library. In a full calf binding. Externally, worn, with chipping to the spine and rubbing to the boards. Rubbing has resulted in loss to the boards. Cracks to the hinges. Internally, hinges tender but remains firmly bound. Dusty and foxed throughout, with some slight browning; edges of first few leaves slightly ragged with loss of some paper from edges of blank endpaper; edges of leaves burnished; "Hannah Kynaston her Book" and an elaborate "Phillips"s Book 1794" in old ink on blank endpaper; piece cut out from title-page; list of books on last two pages.
