Thomas Carte - A General History of England. Volume One and Volume Two.

Title: A General History of England. Volume One and Volume Two.
Description: London, For the Author, Sold by J. Hodges, 1747-50. First edition. Leather. The first editions of the first two volumes of Thomas Carte's somewhat controversial history of England, with Jacobite leanings. Bright, with wide margins. Volume One and Two Only, of Four. "Carte published the first volume of his History of England (4 vols. 1747–55), and was immediately engulfed in a controversy over touching for the king's evil.. Politically Carte's support for this manifestation of divine hereditary right was to lose him some financial support for his history, including that of the corporation of London, which withdrew support in a resolution of April 1748. The withdrawal of some financial support may explain why the other volumes of the History appeared in 1750, 1752, and 1755 (the last posthumously). However, this controversy did not deter Carte from continuing to espouse the Jacobite cause, as there is evidence of his involvement in the Elibank plot in 1752 as an intermediary between Prussia and the Jacobite court" -DNB. Thomas Carte, d.1754, was an English historian. In half calf bindings. Externally, worn, with marks and some loss. The joints are cracked, with boards held by the cords only. Internally, firmly bound, bright, with occasional foxing and marks, prominent to the first and last few pages, and largely marginal tidemarks. With a few small closed tears to the first and last few pages. Overall: GOOD ONLY with good interiors. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
