Title: The Orations of Demosthenes, Delivered on Occasions of Public Deliberation. Together with the Orations of Aeschines and Demosthenes on the Crown
Description: London, W Johnston, 1770. Leather. A wonderful collection of Ancient Greek didactic moral and political speeches, translated in the late eighteenth century. The translator states the original purpose of the orations as being 'to animate a people renowned for justice, humanity, and valour, yet in many instances, degenerate and corrupted; to warn them of the dangers of luxury, treachery, and bribery, of the ambition and persidy of a powerful foreign enemy; to recall the glory of their ancestors to their thoughts; and to imspire them with resolution, vigour, and unanimity; to correct abuses, to restore discipline, to revive and enforce the generous sentiments of patriotism and public spirit&apos. Taunton Castle Surtees Library presentation bookplate to rear pastedown. Thomas Leland (1722–1785) was a historian and Church of Ireland clergyman. In 1754, with his childhood friend John Stokes, he published The Philippic Orations of Demosthenes, a text and Latin translation with notes. He was one of the men of letters who visited the earl of Charlemont at Marino, co. Dublin, and was on intimate terms with the earl's family. Charlemont persuaded him to publish an English translation, The Orations of Demosthenes Against Philip, which appeared in parts from 1754 to 1761 and in a complete edition in 1770, and was frequently reissued. DNB In a full calf binding. Externally sound although somewhat rubbed with slight loss to the leather, and visibly faded. Internally, firmly bound.
