Author: Lucy Hutchinson Title: Memoirs of the Life of Colonel Hutchinson, Governor of Nottingham Castle and Town
Description: London, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1808. Leather. A biography of Lord Hutchinson written by his widow, Lucy. Second edition. Mrs. Lucy Hutchinson (1620Â1681) was an English biographer as well as probably the first translator into English of the complete text of Lucretius's De Rerum Natura during the years of the interregnum (1649-1660). The work throws lights upon the characteristics and conditions of the life of Puritans of good family. Intended for the author's family only, it was printed by a descendant in 1806, and cleared away many false impressions about the narrowness and austerity of the educated Puritans. With portraits of Lord and Lucy Hutchinson, a facsimile of Lucy's handwriting, an illustration showing Nottingham Castle and a fold-out genealogical table. Previous owner's ink inscription to front blank. In a half calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, rather worn and rubbed. Front board held by cords only and rear joint cracked. Internally, firmly bound, bright with slight spotting to plates. Fair . Ill.: None. Fair .
