Richard Cumberland was an English Dramatist and civil servant most famous for his hit play The West Indian which was first staged in 1771. He also edited a short-lived critical journal called The London Review. His plays are often remembered for their sympathetic depiction of colonial characters and others generally considered to be margins of society. The plays in this collection are generally comedies, including The West Indian which was Cumberland's most popular comic work. The Days of Yore is the only drama in this collection and is thought to have been influenced by Horace Walpole's gothic novel The Mysterious Mother. Disbound with original backstrip in tact but boards detached and missing. Externally, some loss to backstrip and soiling to exposed pages. Endpapers missing. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages generally bright with some spotting throughout and pages of occasional foxing. Ink signature to title page of The Imposters. False impressions is incomplete with 8 pages of text missing.
