Title: Souvenirs D&Apos;Italie, D&Apos;Angleterre Et D&Apos;Amerique Suivis de Morceaux Divers de Morale Et de Litterature
Description: None, Henri Colburn, 1815. First edition. Leather. An important early account of travel in America and among its natives. Two volumes bound together as one and complete. A first edition, first printing, printed in French but in London. An English edition was published later in the year by the same publishers. A scarce book. Would benefit from a rebind and very much worthwhile. Scarce. Contains an important early account of travel in America and among its natives. The famous chapter detailing Chateaubriand's "night among the savages" reveals his romanticism on the subject. Much content also on Mackenzie's journey of discovery across the North American continent. Francois-Rene, vicomte de Chateaubriand (September 4, 1768 – July 4, 1848) was a French writer, politician and diplomat. He is considered the founder of Romanticism in French literature. Chateaubriand"s musical prose enriched the French language. Although his accounts of travel were plagiaristic and partly imaginary, they were rich and moving. Leather bound with paper covered boards. There is some wear to the extremities, including a tear with significant loss to the spine. The boards are also chipped and bumped, and the paper is rubbed. The paper to the rear board is damaged with loss. The front board is detached but present. Rear board is held by cords only. Internally, firmly bound. Internally the book is clean and bright apart from some isolated spots and handling marks. There are also some very isolated water marks. There is an ownership plate to the front pastedown. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
