An early nineteenth century edition of Thomas Day's Little Jack and The History of William Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. Illustrated throughout with several vignette woodcuts. Front endpapers have been removed, it is possible that a frontispiece has been removed however there is no evidence to entries on copac or worldcat that there was one originally. No author attributed to title page, though authorship became known as Thomas Day. Thomas Day was a British author and abolitionist. He was best known for his children's book The History of Sandford and Merton which emphasized Rousseauvian educational ideals. The History of Little Jack was extremely popular upon its publication in 1787. In a quarter cloth binding. Externally, worn. Severe rubbing to the spine, joints and boards. Loss to spine at the head and tail, as well as to the joints. Both joints are starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription has offset to front pastedown, though is no longer present due to the removal of front endpapers. Pages are age toned, heavier to edges, due to paper used with scattered spotting throughout. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
