Description: Leipzig, Bernhard Tauchnitz , 1908. Leather. A nice copyright edition of Hewlett's The Spanish Jade. Previously owned by Ronald Lindsay. A half leather hardback with marbled paper boards and gilt lettering on the spine. Maurice Henry Hewlett (1861-1923), was an English historical novelist, poet and essayist. He was born at Weybridge, the eldest son of Henry Gay Hewlett. He was educated at the London International College, and was called to the bar in 1891. He gave up the law after the success of Forest Lovers. From 1896 to 1901 he was Keeper of Lands, Revenues, Records and Enrolments. Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay served as British Ambassador to the United States of America from 1929 to 1939. He was the son of Sir James Lindsay (26th Earl of Crawford) and Emily Lindsay. In 1909 he married Martha Cameron. Martha was the daughter of James Donald Cameron and Elizabeth Sherman Cameron. Martha died in 1918. In 1924 he married Elizabeth Sherman Hoyt, daughter of Colgate Hoyt. A half leather hardback with marbled paper boards and gilt lettering on the spine.There is some wear to the extremities, including rubbing and fading to the spine. The binding is tight and firm with both boards and all internal pages securely attached. Internally the pages are clean and bright with some minor spotting to the first and last few pages. There is a nameplate on the front pastedown. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
