Description: London, Longman, Hurst et al. 1813. Leather. A scarce early edition of this literary criticism. The second edition of William Greenfield's scarce essays of his university lectures on emotional responses to literature. Bound in leather with gilt lettering and decoration. William Greenfield, 1755 - 1827, was a Church of Scotland minister and literary critic. Greenfield was a respected minister and an accomplished scholar, being elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1783. "This flourishing career was cut short when scandalous rumours circulating in Edinburgh caused Greenfield to resign his position in the church on 20 December 1798 and to flee to England. On receiving his letter of resignation, and taking his flight as a tacit admission of guilt, the presbytery of Edinburgh deposed him as a minister of the gospel and excommunicated him from the church.. From his exile in England Greenfield continued to write, publishing (anonymously) in London an edition of his university lectures in London entitled Essays on the Sources of the Pleasures Received from Literary Compositions in 1809, and also contributing anonymously to the Quarterly Review" -ODNB. Reverend Joseph Cook of Newton-on-the-Moor, d.1844, was vicar of Chatton and Shilbottle, and held the estate at Newton Hall, Northumberland. He married Sarah Widdrington in 1786.
