Description: Dublin, A Leathley, J Hoey et al. 1765. Leather. A bright copy of the scarce Sermons by Charles Churchill, published posthumously. Bound in leather with gilt lettering. Information from the Oxford National Biography states that this poem is considered "a short, sharp piece of sustained irony" that "has earned high praise from some modern readers". Charles Churchill, 1731 1764, was an English poet and satirist. He became curate of South Cadbury, Somerset, and, on receiving priest's orders, began to act as his fathers curate at Rainham. He also taught at a nearby school. His published works of satire were a success, although they made him many enemies, and brought reprisals. His scandalous conduct led him to resign his office, after protests from parishioners. In a full calf binding. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including some mild bumping and rubbing. The inner hinges are very slightly strained. There are ink inscriptions on the front and rear pastedowns and on the first page of text. Also, there has been a very small piece of the title page specifically cut out and then repaired, as can be seen aboveThe binding is tight and firm. Internally the pages are bright with intermittent faint spotting. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
