Description: London, T. Paine, 1637. First edition. Leather. A scarce first edition of L'Isle's translation of the works of Du Bartas Rebacked with a new spine label and gilt lettering. With a large commentary by Simon Goulart de Senlis. Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas (1544–July 1590) was a French poet and soldier. A Huguenot, he served under Henry of Navarre. Du Bartas' poems went rapidly out of fashion as the 17th century, characterised by a tight and precise style. His his epic poems La Sepmaine, Creation du Monde and La Seconde Sepmaine retell the main events of the of the Bible from a Huguenot perspective. The Colonnyes, which is the third section of this book offers an insight into The New World of the 1600s. This volume has erratic pagination. This work was taken from La Seconde Semaine and was originally published as Part of Du Bartas in 1625. This volume appears to be missing the final leaf after Finis, which the ESTC (S116416) states should be an Epistle to the Lord Admirall. 1596. With French and English translations throughout. In a full calf binding. There is wear to the extremities including areas of loss and bumping. The inner hinges are strained and the end papers have been removed. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally clean with the odd handling mark. There is the occasional institutional ink stamp but they do not interfere with the text. There are a couple of colour pencil notes to the front end papers. There is some slight chipping to the free end papers. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
