Frank Harris - Elder Conklin and Other Stories

Title: Elder Conklin and Other Stories
Description: London, W. Heinemann, 1895. First edition. Cloth. The first UK edition of Frank Harris' story anthology. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. The first U.S edition was published in 1894, a year before this publication. These stories were written under the influence of authors Maupassant and Balzac. They all regard small-minded materialistic provincials living in the western United States. There are six short stories to this text, Elder Conkin, The Sheriff and His Partner, A Modern Idyll, Eatin' Crow, The Best Man in Garotte and Gulmore, The Boss. Frank Harris was an Irish editor, novelist, short story writer and most famously, a journalist. He was friendly with many well known figures of his day. He attended University of Kansas to study law and eventually gained American citizenship. In original green, gilt stamped binding. Externally, very smart. Slight bumping to extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Prior owner has written the date '1895' underneath the roman numerals and has signed the title page. Pages are generally bright and clean. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
