Matthew Arnold (24 December 1822 15 April 1888) was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. He has been characterised as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues. In a maroon cloth binding with gilt edge to front board and gilt title detail to spine. Externally, generally smart with slight rubbing in places and bumping to the extremities, and slight fraying to head and tail. The hinges have been reinforced. Internally, the binding is generally firm and pages are bright with scattered spotting, and discolouration to the endpapers. There is a personal ink stamp to the front free endpaper; and a paper bookplate to the verso of the title page, of William Alexander Macfarlane-Grieve. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
