Thomson's style reflected the nostalgia of the time, his fine line drawing of rural characters and gentle countrified society appealing to the imagination of the public. Thompson illustrated Mrs Gaskell's Cranford, going on to illustrate eleven of the twenty-four books that came to be called the Cranford series. He was friend with Austin Dobson, and this was the second of his works that he illustrated. This is number 164 of an edition limited to 250 copies. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. In the original cloth. Externally very smart, with some marking to the boards and some fading to the spine. With a private library case label to the front pastedown. The text block is untrimmed but is quite clean.
