Author: Frances Elizabeth Mease Barrow Title: The New Night-Caps Told to Charley
Description: London , D. Appleton & Company, 1860. First edition. Cloth. An early edition of a tale from the night-caps series. Almost certainly the first edition. Illustrated with eight full page amateurly coloured plates. The copyright states that it was entered according to the Act of Congress in 1859 and the title page states that this edition was published in 1860. Therefore this is quite possibly the first, or a very early edition. Others on Worldcat have differing pagination for the 1860 edition, some say 140 pages whereas others list 207pp as we have so it appears there was a shortened edition also published in 1860. Published as a part of Frances Barrow's Nightcaps series. A series of six books, all short story collection linked loosely by their introductory narrative. The premise of the series is that Charley's mother tells him stories, or 'nightcaps', which are retold here. In a full cloth binding with gilt stamping to front board and blind stamping to spine and boards. Externally, sound. Rubbing to head and tail of spine and to extremities. Prior owner's inscription to recto of front endpaper, Lavinia E Dimmick April 13th 1880. Bookseller's label to front pastedown, J T Heald Bookesller.Prior owner's signature to the rear pastedown, Minnie Du Pont. They have initialled an 'M' above 'The End' also. Internally, binding has split between pages 112 and 113 though is still bound to respective endpapers. Otherwise, textblock is generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with slight age-toning to edges. Scattered spots throughout. Fair . Ill.: None. Fair .
