James & Charles Taylor Backhouse - The Life and Labours of George Washington Walker

Title: The Life and Labours of George Washington Walker
Description: London , A W Bennett, 1862. First edition. Cloth. A first edition of this biography of the Quaker missionary, written in part by his missionary partner James Backhouse. In his missionary works he undertook detailed investigations into the plight of aborigines and convicts. The Australian dictionary says of him and James Backhouse that, "As they visited from house to house or presented to large gatherings their version of a simple practical Christianity, they encouraged schools for the poor, temperance, cleanliness and care in hospitals, humane treatment of the insane, and generally tried to arouse a social conscience among the inhabitants of every colony.. "His Quaker grey and 'thees and thous' were outward labels of a nineteenth-century puritan, but he contributed to the community the enlightened leaven of a Dissenter, the care for humanity of an Evangelical, and the gentle methodical persuasion of a Quaker resolved to effect a change in a vicious brutal world." Rebound in cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Externally smart though with some bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally the first few original pages, including the frontispiece, are torn with minor loss. The contents of the frontispiece are unaffected. Internally, lightly age toned and cockled. Otherwise clean and firmly bound. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
